What is ADHD?

ADHD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is a prevalent mental disorder affecting children. Its symptoms include inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, impacting various aspects of life. Left untreated, it can lead to diminished self-esteem and impaired social functioning. In adults, ADHD may result in reduced self-worth and heightened sensitivity to criticism. There are three main types: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive/impulsive, and combined presentation.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

There are two main categories of symptoms in ADHD: inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive.

Inattention (difficulty concentrating and focusing)
The primary indicators of inattentiveness include:

  • A brief attention span and susceptibility to distraction

  • Making careless errors, particularly in tasks such as schoolwork

  • Displaying forgetfulness or misplacing items

  • Difficulty adhering to monotonous or time-consuming tasks

  • Seeming unable to heed or execute instructions

  • Regularly shifting between activities or tasks

  • Struggling with task organization

Hyperactivity and impulsiveness

The key manifestations of hyperactivity and impulsiveness include:

  • Incapacity to remain seated, especially in serene or tranquil settings

  • Continuous fidgeting

  • Inability to sustain concentration on tasks

  • Excessive physical movements

  • Excessive verbal communication

  • Impatience and an inability to wait for one's turn

  • Acting impulsively without thoughtful consideration

  • Interrupting conversations

  • Limited or no awareness of potential dangers

How is ADHD diagnosed?
Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive assessment, considering behavioral observations, medical history, and standardized tests. Criteria outlined in diagnostic manuals, like DSM-5, are used for diagnosis

What causes ADHD?
The exact cause is unknown, but a combination of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors likely contributes to the development of ADHD.

Is ADHD a lifelong condition?
ADHD often persists into adolescence and adulthood, though symptoms may change over time. Many individuals continue to experience challenges, but with treatment you can find 
find effective coping strategies.

What are the treatment options for ADHD?
Treatment may include ADHD Coaching, behavioral therapy, psychoeducation, stimulant or non-stimulant medications, and lifestyle modifications. Individualized treatment plans are crucial.

Can ADHD be managed without medication?
Yes, non-pharmacological approaches like ADHD coaching, behavioral therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and organizational strategies can be effective. However, the choice depends on individual needs and preferences.

How does ADHD affect school performance?
ADHD can impact academic performance due to difficulties with focus, organization, and impulsivity. Individualized educational plans and support services can help.

Can adults have ADHD?
Yes, ADHD often persists into adulthood. Symptoms may manifest differently but can still affect daily functioning.

Is ADHD overdiagnoses or underdiagnosed?
No data to this date suggests that ADHD is overdiagnoses but rather undiagnosed especially in women and in general for those experiencing the inattentive ADHD Type as it is harder to recognize this type. Accurate diagnosis requires thorough evaluation by qualified professionals.

Are there specific diets or foods that help with ADHD?
While no specific diet cures ADHD, some individuals find that a balanced diet, rich in omega-3 fatty acids and low in processed foods, may have positive effects.

What accommodations are available for individuals with ADHD in school or the workplace?
Accommodations may include extended time on tests, preferential seating, and task modifications. Workplace accommodations could involve flexible schedules or organizational support.

Is ADHD curable?
